It was everything you could've imagined when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers hit the stage in Tampa Bay to a crowd over 16,000 fans.
In true Petty fashion, he emerged onto the stage and swung his arms open to a cheering crowd and flashed his mischievous smile. He kicked off the show by saying, “We’re bringing you 100 percent natural rock and roll!” while crowds cheered, “No artificial sweetners! Can you say Yeah!? And no corporate sponsors! We are brought to you by you!”
The show kicked off with a crazy amount of energy and it lasted throughout the entire night. Petty played hit after hit from his extensive musical catalog.
"With a career-spanning set list that left us wanting more. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers served notice that they are America's greatest band."- Stefen Anderson
Being just about 2 hours away from The Heartbreakers hometown, Gainesville, Petty shared “This is really surreal to be here all these years later,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of friends here, a lot of family. I got so many friends in the dressing room I had to buy a liquor license just for them. But I sure do love ‘em all.”
Let's not forget who kicked off the party Saturday night, Joe Walsh! He got the crowd going with a little humor by saying, 'Good morning' at 8pm when he hit the Amalie Arena stage. He rocked out numerous hits along with a tribute to "my brother and fellow bandmate" Glenn Frey by playing an Eagles classic, Take It to the Limit.
"Great shows from both Pettyand Joe Walsh. My favorite part was how much these amazing artist were enjoying themselves. - Arwen Saxson
The night could not have been better, it was a great night to be in the presence or rock and roll royalty!
The night was topped off with Petty saying “Before we leave here,” before he performed his hit American Girl, “I want to hold the world record for the loudest sound ever heard in this building.”
