Monastery Makes Stray Dog an Honorary Monk

At the St. Francis Monastery in Cochabamba, Bolivia, there is a rather…fuzzy monk. Friar Bigoton or, in English, Friar Mustache is a dog who joined the monastery after being adopted. After finding the stray on the streets, friar Jorge Fernandez decided to give the pooch a home.

Jorge Fernandez told Dodo that “his life is all about playing and running. Here, all of the brother love him very much. He is a creature of God.”Known as the patron of animals, Saint Francis would definitely be proud!

Friar Mustache can be caught running around in a habit. Online, the monastery has been recording his journey as a the first dog monk. Franciscan Kasper Mariusz Kapron posted a photo of the dog staring at fish in the pond. The caption read “Here’s Brother Carmelo preaching to the fish.”

The monastery is hoping to spread the importance of adopting homeless animals. By showing photos of Friar Mustache, they dream of inspiring other people to give a home to a furry baby. The local animal rescue group, Proyecto Narices Frias, also known as the Cold Nose Project, helped to get Friar into his new home.

Friar Bigotón is my Lentspiration @anamariecox

Proyecto Narices Frias is planning on working with other monasteries in the future in order to give other animals a place to call home. In a post on their Facebook page announcing Friar Mustache’s new home, they wrote “If only all the churches of our country adopt a dog and care for him like Friar Bigoton. We are sure that the parishioners would follow his example.”

The newly adopted home seems to be enjoying his new surroundings. By Facebook photos that have been posted within the past few weeks, Friar Mustache definitely is loving life. Not only has he been able to find a forever home, but he has also managed to land himself a job…and new wardrobe!
