11 Products Where Generic Is As Good As Name Brand
Sometimes buying the “leading brand” isn’t getting you a better product. Take a look and you might find that you can save a few dollars by purchasing generic products. Here is a list of items for which generic might be as good as the name brand.
1. Over-the-counter medication
Since the FDA requires the active drug in brand name and generic products of the same, it should be a no-brainer.
2. Produce
A head of lettuce is a head of lettuce. Unless you’re looking for organic or some special method of farming, it’s the same thing.
3. Latex Condoms
These are also regulated by the FDA, so the effectiveness should not be affected by the label.
4. Purified Water
Pretty much says it all right there. Purified water is purified water. That’s not to say it’s the same as distilled or mineral water.
5. Table Salt
It’s sodium chloride, as we learned in science class, plus iodine, plus something to keep it from clumping. Buy the cheaper one.
6. Sugar
Another product regulated by the FDA.
7. Milk
Just keep an eye on that ‘sell by’ date, but milk will be the same. Remember that is different when it has ‘organic’ or ‘raw’ on the label.
8. Electronic Cables
The manufacturers follow specs for a cable when they make it for a purpose, such as HDMI. There are few reasons to pay the higher price. Note: Phone chargers do not follow this rule. Try to stay with name-brand chargers, or the ones designated for your phone by the manufacturer.
9. Sunscreen
The SPF rating and providing UVA and UVB protection are the factors to check when buying sunscreen.
10. Certain beauty supplies
A brush, nail clippers, tweezers, these are items for which you can buy generic and not have to worry. They’re usually pretty cheap and replaceable.
11. Batteries
Studies have shown that expensive batteries aren’t always better than cheap, generic batteries. This isn’t comparing alkaline batteries to non-alkaline.
