News of the supergroup's latest schism surfaced last year after Crosby made scathing remarks about Neil Young leaving his wife Pegi and taking up with actress Daryl Hannah, and Nash subsequently revealed that he was no longer talking to his longtime friend.
Now Crosby -- who's releasing a new solo album, Sky Trails, on Sept. 29, tells us that it was he who actually chose to step out of the group:
"Yeah. I quit...Same thing that happens with groups, all groups over the years. You start out being very much in love with each other and you love each other's music, and you're having a blast and you wind up 40 years later not liking each other and it's down to just turn on the smoke machine and play your hits. And it's no fun. It was stifling music for me. It was making music be no fun."
As to whether the professional or personal relationships will ever be mended, Crosby simply said, "Don't know. No idea."
Crosby will tour to support Sky Trails, his third album in four years, on Oct. 30-31 at the City Winery in Chicago.
