We have all seen the devastation left in the Caribbean from the passing of hurricanes Irma and Maria. In fact as it stands now 90% of the cell service is down. In this day and age of cell phones it is the way most people stay in communication and with the tower damage done by the high winds its hard to say when service will be restored. This is where Alphabet comes in. Alphabet, the parenting company of Google, has just been granted permission by the Federal Communications Commission to launch balloons from their Loon Project over the Caribbean island. Each balloon would hover about 12 miles off the ground and provide voice and data coverage for roughly 2,000 square miles (5,000 square kilometers). The coverage would be provided through local carriers.
