Today, October 20, 2017, marks 40 years since the plane carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in Mississippi.

Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, singer Cassie Gaines, along with the crew of the plane died in the crash. Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie’s younger brother, survived the crash.

The plane was en route from Greenville, South Carolina to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The band went on a haitus, and 10 years later they reunited with Johnny Van Zant singing lead. There is still one
founding member touring with the band, guitarist Gary Rossington.
