The Tampa Bay area won't get the best view of everything happening at once, but we'll still get a taste of it. You can, however, view it on NASA TV or NASA.gov/live.

The western part of the U.S. will get the best live view of the moon. What's so special about this event?

There are three reasons.

First, it's a 'supermoon', a time when the moon is closest to the Earth in its orbit. It'll appear larger and will be about 15% brighter in the sky.

Second, it's the second full moon this month, and that's what's known as a 'blue moon.'

Third, the moon will pass through the Earth's shadow as a full total eclipse in the best viewing areas. When this happens, the moon takes on a reddish hue, and that's what's known as a 'blood moon.'
