She passed away at her home surrounded by family after falling ill in the last couple of weeks.
On Sunday, former President George Bush's office released a statement saying that after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs. Bush had “decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care.”
Barbara Bush was the second woman in American History to see her son follow in his father's footsteps when becoming the 43rd President of the United States.
The Bushes recently celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary this past January, which made them the longest-married couple in presidential history.
