Bruce Springsteen was the recipient of the Special Tony Award at last night’s 72nd Annual Tony Awards for his show Springsteen on Broadway.

The award itself was presented by Billy Joel who reminded the audience that Springsteen on Broadway was originally supposed to be an eight-week limited engagement, but due to its success, it’ll end this December netting a staggering 236 shows.

Fortunately, The Boss didn’t just attend to accept an award; he also performed an abridged version of “My Hometown,” which was prefaced with a moving monologue about his childhood growing up in Frehold, New Jersey.

Despite its many extensions, Springsteen on Broadway has been one of the toughest tickets to get, but we seriously hope that one performance gets recorded to air as a TV special or as a DVD/Blu-ray release.  This is something every Springsteen fan should get a chance to see.
