An Australian man will have to shell out $14,000 and serve 300 hours of community service as his penalty for defacing a mural of George Michael.
24-year-old Ben Gittany covered the artwork in black paint last year just days after Australia passed their same-sex marriage law. The mural depicts Michael as St. George. He’s wearing a robe, has a halo and is holding a joint.
Gittany, a Christian, claimed he was “defending his religion” by defacing the painting. After the art was covered up, people scribbled messages on top of the black paint such as “Gotta Have Faith” and “Love Wins.”
