Hundreds of Health Care Licenses Suspended in Florida Due to Student Loan Defaults
It turns out that Florida is the only state that is enforcing its laws when it comes to defaulting on student loans and keeping a health care license.
Just over 900 licenses have been suspended in the state because of defaulted loan payments. There are 12 other states that have not enforced the law, and four states ended up repealing the law.
“We’re not saying that people shouldn’t repay their loan,” said attorney Christie Arkovich. “We’re just saying that getting them fired probably isn’t the best way to go about that.”
Ultimately, the strain is put on employers as well as patients.
“You take their license, you take their way of working, how are you going to get your lump sum?” said registered nurse Andrea Chandler. “How are you going to get your payment? You’re already not getting your payment.”
There are more than 10 percent of student loans that are in default status according to the U.S. Department of Education.
