Earlier this week the Food and Drug Administration commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb called back furloughed federal employees back to work to resume food inspections without pay. Gottlieb updated via Twitter on Wednesday that a new law was signed that would “guarantee that federal workers who are furloughed or working without pay will be compensated for the period of funding lapse.” Since the government shutdown “low-risk” food has been delayed for inspection while high-risk foods like vegetables, baby formula, eggs, and meat are still being inspected. Regardless, it’s a good idea to follow the USDA’s guidelines for safely preparing, cooking and storing food.
