Florida Most Dangerous For Pedestrians
The Tampa Bay area (and seven other metro areas) is among the top 10 most dangerous places in American to walk. That is according to a study released on on Jan. 23rd by the advocacy group Smart Growth America.
The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area had 900 pedestrian deaths from 2008 to 2017, the new report says. That is up from the 821 pedestrians who were killed across the region over a 10-year period through 2014.
Tampa Bay’s rank among the most deadly regions dropped from 7 to 9 since the group’s last study in 2016, but the number of pedestrian deaths increased in that same time period.
Jeff Johnson, Florida State Director of the AARP is quoted as saying, “Florida is the deadliest state in America to simply walk. And older Floridians are especially at risk.”
So, the next time you want to take a long walk or bike ride, you might want to use some extra caution. I know I will.
