Katy Perry Gets Backlash Over "Blackface" Shoe Controversy

Katy Perry's shoe brand is the latest lightning rod for blackface.

A design from Perry's namesake collection has been pulled from store shelves. The sandal and loafer feature huge eyes and exaggerated red lips.

The shoes have been available since 2017. Recent blackface controversies involving the governor of Virginia and Gucci raised a red flag to people who started commenting on the shoes on social media.

The shoe was available in different colors but the black ones have sparked the conversation.

Perry responded to the criticism saying, "I was saddened when it was brought to my attention that it was being compared to painful images reminiscent of blackface. Our intention was never to inflict any pain. We have immediately removed them."
Do you think designers totally missed this?
