The state of Florida owns a nature preserve south of the Skyway Bridge. They will lease rights to the Lost Coast Oyster Company who will set up cages to raise oysters. The plan is to harvest up to a million oysters that will be raised at the underwater farm.
Oysters are filter feeders, so a million oysters would help clean the water at roughly 50 gallons of water per oyster.
The company would like to get the first cages begun by this summer, so it will be nine months to a year before the first oysters can be harvested for eating.
