Engagement: How Long Should You Wait?

When it comes to engagements, experts say you should wait…

MARGATE, FL – NOVEMBER 11: Brian McGuinn holds hands with his wife Anne McGuinn, wearing her 1.5-carat diamond engagement ring on November 11, 2011 in Margate, Florida. Brian says that after realizing he had inadvertantly thrown the ring into the trash October 30, he went to the local waste disposal site the next day where he faced a mountain of rotting garbage. He says he managed to somehow find his trash bag in the mound where he said “it was absolutely disgusting. It stunk beyond belief.” (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

A recent poll done by Yougov asked how long you should date someone before you get engaged. The answers may surprise you.

After all, if you are madly in love with someone and you think this is "the one", how long should you really wait? And how long is too long. The poll quizzed over 7,500 people and this is what they said:

  1. Less than 6 months of dating - only 2% said is okay. 98% said that is too early.
  2. 6 to 12 months - 18% said that is the right amount of time.
  3. 12 to 18 months - 20% said its a good amount of time, making this the number one answer.
  4. 18 to 24 months - 15%
  5. 2 to 3 years - 15%
  6. 3 to 4 years - only 14%
  7. 4 to 5 years - just 2%
  8. More than 5 years - also only 2%

And 22% of people said they weren't sure what the right amount of time is.

And the real surprising stat - women are a little more gun-shy about getting engaged than men. 23% of men said you should propose within the first year of dating, while only 18% of women thought it was a good idea to get engaged that quickly.

Well.. I guess, "times they are a changin"!
