The story was reported by Fox 32 and could have had a much worse ending for the sweet little dog. Hawks and eagles are known to swoop down from the skies and latch on to things like rabbits, squirrels, cats and even smaller dogs.
The hawk was sitting on the roof of a neighbor's house and as soon as the dog was left alone it swooped in. The owner saw what was happening on the home survelliance camera and quickly ran out, just as the hawk had the dog pinned, trying to kill its prey. The teenager screamed at the bird and tried to scare it off, while grabbing a cushion from a nearby lawn chair and began hitting the hawk.
The quick thinking teen said it took 3 or 4 swats to get the hawk off of the dog, but the hawk finally let go and fled. Fortunately the only damage to the dog was some claw marks on it's neck.
This incident happened in Las Vegas, but can happen anywhere. It's never a good idea to leave your small pet unattended in an outsid area like that. This type of thing happens more than you would think. In fact, they have even came up with a talon-proof vest for your dog to wear that gives your dog a fighting chance in the case of a bird attack.
I still say as a responsible pet owner it is better to never leave your pet unattended. Especially here along the coast of Florida where Hawks and eagles roam freely.

Better to be safe than sorry, right?
