Dental visits are stressful enough. This story doesn't help. The comforting thing we always have in the back of our mind is that if we need work done, there's anesthesia. We don't think of that part of dentistry as being all that risky.

This incident actually happened a few years ago but an Odessa couple is still waiting for a resolution. They ended up losing their son after he went in for a cleaning. 39 year old Tommy Myers was a special needs patient with Down Syndrome according to Channel 8. He suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. He was put on life support and died a couple days later. A Florida Department of Health investigator found that Tommy was overmedicated during the procedure at Grand Dentistry in New Port Richey. They say the dentist involved in still practicing and there still hasn't been any disciplinary action taken.

The Channel 8 story really though just tells one side of the story. I'd imagine we won't hear from the dentist involved for legal reasons, but we've got a good discussion going on Facebook if you'd like to join in or tweet @Q105Geno.
