Remember the days when you might look forward to flying in a plane? It's not quite as enjoyable as it used to be.

Airports and security lines are crowded, flights are expensive, and travelers are grumbly. Well, according to a recent survey, most people would rather drive anwhere within 6 1/2 hours rather than get on a plane.

More people plan to make road trips over the next five years.

For our family, the magic number is somewhere around 4 1/2. We always have the debate as to whether we should fly or drive to South Florida. With no stops, you can do the trip in less than 4 1/2 hours. If you book air travel from Miami to Tampa, you have to factor in the drive to and from the airport; getting through security at the airport; the hour plus wait; and getting a rental car or transportation from the airport in Miami. If your flight is delayed even by fifteen minutes, you are approaching the 4 1/2 hour mark. It's really a coin toss, but for some, it's just more enjoyable to be in the car and skip the hassles of air travel.
