I’m so glad this is being addressed. When abbreviating Tampa International Airport, is it “TIA,” as in the true acronym, or is it the airport code, “TPA”?
Well, the airport tweeted this week (in all caps so shouting at us): IT’S TPA NOT TIA.
If you’re confused it may be because during the 80’s and 90’s the airport did call itself TIA.
TIA is actually the code for an airport in Albania. A spokesperson for TPA says, “As long as people consider us their favorite airport, we don’t care what you call us.”
And here’s a little extra travel tidbit. People left almost $1 million in change at security lines in airports last year, $12,000 of which was at TPA. Can you imagine how much money all the toothpastes and shampoos and such that are collected at security would add up to?
