We call them Palmetto Bugs in Florida. Sounds better than "cockroach." Right?

Well, whatever you call them...they are rapidly evolving to be resistant to pesticides. Pretty soon they could be impossible to kill with just chemicals. How is this happening? Researchers have found that they're passing down their insecticide-resistant genes to their babies (and they make a lot of babies).

Now you might say, "Well, I certainly don't like cockroaches, but they can't hurt you." Not so fast. They carry bacteria, which can include salmonella and E. coli, which can make people sick. (That's why cockroaches are such big offenders when it comes to Dirty Dining reviews.)

Future methods to control the pests will involve traps, vacuums, and increased hygiene.
