July 4th is upon us and so are the fireworks that come with it. If you're a dog owner, you know how your dog reacts to the explosions they'll be hearing. Here are ways to help keep down the level of anxiety.

  • Get your dog exercise early int he day to work off energy
  • Be sure your dog has a collar with a tag (just in case)
  • Securely leash your dog if you're outdoors
  • If possible, keep dog inside with windows and doors closed
  • Find a place where you can keep your dog away from the noise
  • If your dog is crate-trained, use it to keep your dog comfortable
  • Play the TV or music to mask the fireworks
  • Give dog toys or treats for a distraction
  • Ask your vet for more ideas if necessary

How do you know if your dog is stressed out? You may see cowering, shaking or panting. Perhaps whining, howling or barking. It may try to run away, or hide in unusual places.
