According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport was ranked No. 8 among all airports, with the lowest domestic airfares during the first quarter of this year.
As reported by News Channel 8, the airport’s average domestic round-trip cost is $126.14. That’s nearly a third of the national domestic average of $352.06, as reported by others in the first quarter.
St Pete International (PIE) routinely has between 150 and 200 domestic airlines departing weekly, according to their public relations director, Michele Routh.
One of the most popular, no frills airline at PIE is Allegiant Airlines. They operate 54 non-stop destinations to and from Clearwater out of the airline’s 55 domestic destinations.
Airport director Tom Jewsbury had this to say:
“We are very pleased to see Allegiant’s continued growth at PIE with affordable air fare for our local community and for visitors enjoying our beautiful destination. We are making several improvements that will be completed in the coming year that will improve customer amenities and our opportunities for continued growth. ”
If you’ve flown Allegiant Airlines, you will know it is a very basic airline with no frills or added luxuries. However, sometimes it’s all you need. Nothing fancy, just basic transportation to and from.
It’s good to know there are still some good deals out there.
