With all the crazy rain we’ve seen over the past week, an odd sight has a lot of Tampa area residents a little creeped out. Why are there fish on the sidewalk!? Are they really WALKING? What are they? Where did they come from?
First off, you’re not crazy. You’re not seeing things. Those are “walking catfish” according to Tampa reddit user “DontCallMeMillenial.” He says they were brought in to the area decades ago for fish farming. Thing is – they can breathe air and they’ve escaped. He says they can come from retention ponds, marshes and even sewers! He says Hillsborough County is a “hotspot” for them. I’ve lived in the Tampa area now for 8 years and this is a new one on me. You’re so weird Tampa. But I love you.
I think we’ve had enough rain here in Tampa. The fish are confusing the sidewalk with the bay. pic.twitter.com/jZUwzEE783— John E. Mullinax, MD, FACS (@JohnEMullinaxMD) August 1, 2019
