Polk County announced earlier today that classes will be cancelled Tuesday and Wednesday as Dorian approaches. Now Hillsborough County Schools have also cancelled school at least for Tuesday. They issued the statement below:

After being briefed by Hillsborough County Emergency Management, Hillsborough County Public Schools has made the decision to cancel school on Tuesday due to Hurricane Dorian.

The storm continues to strengthen and move in an unpredictable path. We made this decision today to allow our families and employees time to plan.

This decision is based on a number of factors:

  • The likelihood of our schools being called upon to serve as shelters, both for people from our area and other Floridians coming over from the east coast
  • The potential for dangerous weather conditions and heavy rain in our area Tuesday
  • The likelihood of high winds Tuesday, which would prevent our school buses from operating and impact students traveling to and from school.

We will continue to work with emergency officials and we will provide updates on the status of school for Wednesday when the path of the storm becomes clearer.

Thank you,

Hillsborough County Public Schools
