“Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek made an appearance at his alma mater on Friday, the University of Ottawa.
While there, he was gracious enough to give an interview to the CTV Network, where he spoke about a variety of subjects, most importantly, his battle with cancer. Trebek has been openly public about being diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Mr. Trebek was asked how he was feeling and his candid response is below:
“I’m hanging in. So we’re back on the chemo and we’ll see if the numbers go down. And if they do, they can’t keep doing it forever, of course. I’ll have to find a new protocol or whatever to administer. We’ll play it by ear and keep chunking along until we either win or lose.”
Trebek says the day after chemo treatments that his eyesight “gets messed up” and the day after that, he starts to feel pain in his joints. He added that he’s begun to get sores inside his mouth from the chemotherapy, which can makes it hard to enunciate. He sometimes hears himself slurring his words on the quiz show. However Trebek added this..
“I will keep doing it (the show) as long as my skills do not diminish, and they have started to diminish”.
It could be a sign that Trebek may be thinking of giving up the show. After all, this is a very serious cancer, at what most would view as the end stage.
However, Alex seems to be beating the odds so far. He credits his family, friends and fans for helping him along through prayer. Alex was quoted as saying the thought of his pancreatic cancer does not frighten him saying,..
“I’m 79 years old. So, hey, I’ve lived a good life, a full life, and I’m nearing the end of that life. I know that.”
It sounds as if Alex may be growing weary with his fight. He’s faced this deadly disease head on the whole time. We truly wish Alex the very best and will continue to keep him in our prayers.
