I thought these things were already done away with in Pinellas, but apparently in 2018 over 17,000 tickets were issued in Clearwater from red light cameras. After all the maintenance costs, ABC Action News reports that was about $3 million in revenue. They say 15% were out of state drivers and that only 26% were actually Clearwater residents.
They cameras have been in Clearwater since 2012 but the contract expires at the end of this month. There’s one at the intersection at Belcher and Gulf to Bay. And there’s one at Ft Harrison and Chestnut. Clearwater’s Police Cheif Dan Slaughter told ABC that the Belcher/Gulf To Bay intersection has the worst crash rate in Clearwater.
