The City of Lakeland has been studying the red-light running trend. They're going to roll out a program that will keep motorists stopped at intersections a beat longer when it seems a driver might run a red light.
The City has put in some special sensors at four main intersections to collect data:
North Crystal Lake Drive and Bartow Road
Memorial Blvd and Dr. Martin Luther King Street
South Florida Avenue and Beacon Road
Memorial Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue
The data is shocking. They're still finding that nearly 50 drivers per day at each intersection run red lights.
With this new technology, the sensors will detect whether or not someone is going to run a red light and make sure all lights at the intersection remain red for an extra one to four seconds.
