Straz was on a fishing trip with friends when he reportedly passed peacefully in his sleep.
The David A. Straz Jr. Foundation announced the news on Monday.
In 2018, Straz battled Jane Castor in Tampa's mayoral race, which he lost in a runoff.
His foundation is represented in the Tampa area as sponsor of the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts and David A. Straz Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center.
