This story is upsetting to me in more ways than one. As an animal lover, I can’t help but feel there should have been some other option for this incident.
According to ABC Action News, a Hillsborough County Sheriffs deputy shot and killed a dog near the Gasparilla Parade route. The shooting incident happened Saturday night, January 25th., near 345 Bayshore Boulevard.
Deputies reported that the dog had attempted to attack a Hillsborough County mounted deputies’ horse three different times, so the deputy shot the dog out of fear and to protect his horse.
The public information officer with Hillsborough County Sheriff office reported that the dog was a large breed, approximately 70 pounds, and that the dog has died. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s horse is fine.
There is no other information at this time on the dog, the dog’s owner, or what may have provoked the dog to attack.
Still, I can’t help but wonder if there was another alternative to deadly force with this dog, perhaps the use of a using taser etc. (if the officer had one). I will certainly be watching to see what other information comes from this story.
IMO… I think every police officer in the country should be issued a taser. There are so many instances that could be avoided, if only the officer involved had a taser. What do you think? Leave a comment on our Facebook page HERE. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
SAnd speaking of Gasparilla, here are a few photos from yesterday… and the past.
