Love to see big companies helping those in need. And farmers and food banks could really use some help right now. And Publix is stepping up.
The Lakeland-based grocery store chain is making a promise to buy fresh produce and milk from farmers who've been negatively affected by the pandemic. Then Publix is going to take those food and beverage items and give them to Feeding America for their food banks.
The goal is 150,000 pounds of produce and in excess of 43,500 gallons of milk. Wow!
Publix CEO Todd Jones said, “As a food retailer, we have the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the needs of families and farmers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. In this time of uncertainty, we are grateful to be able to help Florida’s produce farmers, southeastern dairies and families in our communities.”
Because of school, restaurant and hotel closures, farmers have had no other option but to get rid of unsold produce and milk. Publix is saving the day!
