Tampa Bay area protests turned violent on Saturday night as hundreds took to the streets.

Protesters looted and burglarized about 40 Tampa businesses and five of those were set on fire, including a gas station and a Champs Sports store. Most of the violence centred around the University Mall area.

During a press conference Sunday morning, Tampa Police Chief Dugan said, “If you are peaceful protester, I’m asking you to stay home. Do not come out. It’s a different tone right now…the behavior that took place last night will not be tolerated today.”
