When an 11-year-old began a program of recycling books and stuffed animals, a movie star got wind of it and made a donation.
Actress Drew Barrymore learned of Zach Hartman’s system of recycling from seeing the story originally reported by News Channel 8. She hosted the young starter of “Zach’s Planet” on her TV show. During the broadcast, Drew pledged $5,000 to help him continue his crusade to keep books and toys out of landfills.
These are the stats, according to Zachs Planet‘s Facebook page:
- 40,000 lbs kept out of landfills
- 2,400 trees saved by reusing books
- 65,000 books collected and donated to schools and Little Free Libraries
- 3,000 stuffed animals repurposed as pet toys for animal shelters
