7 people infected with listeria in Massachusetts, CDC reports

Fox 13 reports that one Florida resident has now died in connection with a Listeria outbreak in some meats sold at retailers in Florida, Massachusetts and New York. So far they say 10 have been infected. The illnesses began in August.

Specifically it seems to be prepackaged and sliced Italian deli meats like salami, prosciutto and mortadella. They still haven’t isolated the source of the outbreak though. You’re at higher risk if you’re over 65 or have immune system issues. They say the symptoms to look out for include a fever, fatigue or a headache. (Jeez, sounds familiar, doesn’t it?) The symptoms don’t start in the first week. In fact it can take up to a month to show signs.

They say it’s a good idea to heat meats to a temperature of 165 degrees. Also wash your hands after handling meat and keep it separate from other foods. [Source: Fox 13]
