Douglas Allen Hatley of Lakeland found out the hard way. The seventy-one year old is looking at a grand theft charge after he did just that. He drove the utlitly pole to a recycling center after strapping it on his car.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers got involved after they were called about the incindent taking place near I-75.
According to Public Affairs Officer Sgt. Steve Gaskins, Hatley drove the pole loaded on the roof to a recycling facility on Harney Road.
The recyling company did not accept the pole for recycling because Hatley did not present the proper documentation.
