Recyling is a good thing…but not if you see a downed utility pole on the road and strap it to the roof of your car.
Douglas Allen Hatley of Lakeland found out the hard way. The seventy-one year old is looking at a grand theft charge after he did just that. He drove the utlitly pole to a recycling center after strapping it on his car.
Florida Police say a 71 year old driver picked up a downed metal utility pole, strapped it to the roof of his 1997 Toyota Camry, and planned to sell it to a scrapyard. He didn't get too far. This guy clearly has 'Scraper Strength' to get that pole up on the car by himself. pic.twitter.com/4AzIdREMiT— The Morning X w/ Mark & Chris (@89XMorningX) November 17, 2020
Florida Highway Patrol troopers got involved after they were called about the incindent taking place near I-75.
According to Public Affairs Officer Sgt. Steve Gaskins, Hatley drove the pole loaded on the roof to a recycling facility on Harney Road.
The recyling company did not accept the pole for recycling because Hatley did not present the proper documentation.
