The NBA season will begin the 2020-2021 season with a team located in Tampa. What team is it?

With Covid-19 limiting travel between the U.S. and Canada, the Toronto Raptors needed to find a home to play their games. This is similar to how the Toronto Blue Jays played their home games in Buffalo in 2020. The Toronto Raptors will make their home at Amalie Arena after not being able to come to an agreement with Canadian officials to allow the team to play their games in Toronto. This NBA season will begin December 22 (with preseason games played from Dec. 11-19, 2020) and each team will play 36 home games.

Amalie Arena has hosted basketball before, having hosted regional college tournaments and the Women’s Final Four several times.

In a statement from the team’s owner Masai Ujiri:

The Raptors worked diligently with public health officials at the local, provincial and federal level to secure a plan that would permit us to play our 2020-21 season on home soil and on our home court at Scotiabank Arena. These conversations were productive, and we found strong support for the protocols we put forward. Ultimately, the current public health situation facing Canadians, combined with the urgent need to determine where we will play means that we will begin our 2020-21 season in Tampa, Florida.

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos tweeted his support.
