Wednesday afternoon a fatal shootout occurred in St. Petersburg.
St. Pete police officers were looking for 20 year-old Domminique Harris. Harris was wanted for a child abuse incident against a fifteen year-old that took place in October. A task force got a tip about his location.
The officers were able to find him inside a car parked at a convenience store in South St. Pete at 1400 18th Avenue South. They asked Harris for his identification and were able to confirm. The suspect refused orders from the officers to get out of the car. He rolled up the window and tried to get away in the car, crashing into vehicles and obstructions. He shot at officers and was also shot, and then died at a local hospital.
Sheriff of Pinellas County Bob Gualtieri said the officer who was shot is lucky to be alive. He is in stable condition after being shot in the lower torso.
Such a sad situation that did not have to end this way had the suspect cooperated and not fired at police.
