A hacker accessed the water treatment plant in Oldsmar and changed settings, making a dangerous change.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office released the details of an ongoing situation. The FBI and Secret Service are involved in the investigation as well.
The hacker increased the amount of sodium hydroxide to dangerous levels. It is the same chemical used in liquid drain cleaner, according to Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.
Hackers have accessed the plant multiple times, but it’s not clear if it has come from inside or outside the United States.
The change was immediately corrected by staff inside the plant. The public was not in danger. There are also several automatic systems in place to alert and correct these issues.
