Florida Approves Deal For Las Vegas-Style Casinos, Online Sports Betting
The Seminole Tribe and the state got closer as the Florida legislature voted on an agreement about gambling.
The Florida state Senate and House each approved the deal negotiated by Governor Ron DeSantis. The deal includes the addition of Las Vegas-style games such as roulette and craps to Seminole casinos. Also, sports betting will be available through the Seminole tribe with mobile apps. Parimutuel sites such as racetracks and jai-alai frontons would also offer sports betting.
The deal is expected to bring in hundreds of millions in revenue to be shared with the Seminole Tribe and the state. The sports betting part of the deal is still being examined. It could be removed if it’s deemed to violate legal barriers that control gambling. If it is kept in, the measure would allow legal gamblers to wager on sports using their cellular phones in Florida beginning October 15th.
In a press release from the Florida Senate, Senate President Wilton Simpson said:
“By comprehensively addressing issues raised for almost a decade, this historic legislation restores Florida’s relationship with the Seminole Tribe, offers new opportunities for Florida’s legacy parimutuel industry, and provides substantial new revenues for our state. After years of negotiations and the hard work of many people on both sides, I’m pleased to see this significant legislation pass the Senate today.”
The Senate voted to approve, 38 to 1, while the House voted 97-17.
