It turns out the scratching noises by the front door were from a visiting alligator. In a Facebook post, Courtney Ventrone wrote the family might not have noticed if they weren't already up at 4 a.m.
They looked outside and saw the alligator under their security lights. There are several ponds around in their area. She posted a few photos to Facebook of their encounter with the late-nite visitor.
Courtney's son was interested in the alligator and it distracted him from the nightmare that had the family up at the late-night hour. The family was prepared to call for a trapper if the reptile was still there in the morning.
