Long known as Beer Can Island, the privately owned island hasn’t been permitted to do much without proper zoning. The owners are looking to make changes.
Tampa Bay’s Beer Can Island recycled into Pine Key, seeks okay for additions https://t.co/BsyA7WTLFG— tbt* (@tbtnewspaper) August 26, 2021
The name change from Beer Can Island to Pine Key is just the first step. The owners of the island hope to change the zoning for the property. They would like to see Hillsborough County zoning allow the land to be used for “public/quasi-public use.” This would permit the building of structures, such as tiki huts, stage for concerts and restrooms for events to be held on the island.
The current owners purchased the island in 2017. After building structures on the island, the county put a stop to having events on the island because they hadn’t given approval or permits.
The island is currently open to members, and events have taken place with amenities available to those members. There has been an application submitted for land use, and sheds were added to the island with that submission. There is a scheduled public hearing and vote by the Hillsborough County Commission for the amended land plan on October 21, 2021.
