The segment beginning north of the I-4 interchange north to beyond Hillsborough Avenue will be widened an extra lane each direction. This will use existing right-of-way.
The widening isn't the only improvement involved with this project. Noise barrier walls will be added plus fencing and "Intelligent Transportation System" devices are also going to be added to the segment of highway. The underpasses at Floribraska Avenue, Lake Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Chelsea Avenue, Osbourne Avenue and Hillsborough Avenue each will be reconstructed with wider sidewalks and brighter underdeck lighting.
Work will take place during day and nighttime hours. If lane closures are needed, those will happen between 9 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. When necessary, ramps for the interstate may be closed between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. for signage and underpass work.
Warning signs and message boards will be used to guide motorists through the construction zone.
The projected timeline for this construction is expected to run through early 2026.
