Tampa Bay’s Robby Steinhardt Releases First Solo Album
Robby Steinhardt had been working on the album almost up until his passing this summer. Now, it’s been released.
Robby visited us at Q105, and we miss his presence, though his music with Kansas still continues to play. However, Robby wasn’t content to play Kansas music alone. He wrote and recorded this album of new material, plus a classic that got a new twist and feel to it.
As news came of the passing of Kansas violinist and Tampa resident Robby Steinhardt, it brought to a close the musical career of one of progressive rock’s most well known sounds: the violin and voice of a Kansas band founder. What it also did was delay the release of his first and only solo album. Robby had been working on it in his last months leading up to the illness that sent him to the hospital.
With nine new songs, plus a re-imagined recording of “Dust in the Wind,” the album Not In Kansas Anymore was released as a download, CD or LP. The album was produced by Michael Thomas Franklin, who also recently produced the 1000 Hands album for Jon Anderson of Yes. As on that album, a number of familiar names were brought in to perform with Robby. Those musicians include: Chuck Leavell, who played and recorded with the Allman Brothers and The Rolling Stones; Patrick Moraz, who played for Yes and The Moody Blues; Liberty DeVitto, Billy Joel’s long-time drummer; Pat Travers; Bobby Kimball of Toto; Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull and so many more.
