Tampa Grandmother Falls For Scam, Loses Over $700,000
A woman falls for the ‘grandparent scam’ that cost her hundreds of thousands of dollars.
An 82-year-old woman from Tampa received a call from someone who claimed to be hear granddaughter. The woman was told her granddaughter needed money for legal problems.
After being told to make cash withdrawals from the bank, she gave the money to a courier through rides set up with Uber. This happened 13 times, with the last withdrawal reaching $100,000.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department investigators are looking into the Uber rides. The shared rides took place from April until August. Uber is said to be cooperating. The woman did not schedule the Uber rides, so it’s expected the records may show who contacted and paid for the rides.
The woman’s attorney is also suing her bank. The bank continued to give her the withdrawn funds even after calls were made to the Department of Children and Families. There is a statute that is set up to protect people from exploitation.
