A 57-year-old Gainesville resident reported fired a flamethrower toward an occupied car. There were three teens inside who scurried out the passenger side of the car. The mother of one of teens said she witnessed the incident. Law enforcement said the flames reached within five feet of the car when the three teens escaped the vehicle.
The man faces three counts of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intending to kill. He was released on $15,000 bond.
One of the witnesses described when he uses the flamethrower at night. Sh said it lights up the road as if it's daylight. He accused man admitted using the flamethrower. However, he denied targeting the teens who were in the car.
What may be surprising is that there are no laws in Florida against ownership or use of flamethrowers. The model that police identified in the man's arrest report was a XM42 Lite Flamethrower. It will fire flames up to 20 feet, and it costs about $900. It's produced by X Products LLC. They're not the only manufacturer of flamethrowers. Elon Musk's The Boring Company also makes flamethrowers.
We would post the commercial the manufacturer posted, but felt it wasn't quite appropriate. You can find it on Youtube here.
