Man Charged For Selling Tom Brady Super Bowl Rings
A man, pretending to be a football player, was busted for selling three Tom Brady Super Bowl rings! Where did he get the rings?
According to ABC Action News, this story starts back in 2017 when Scott Spina of Roseland, New Jersey bought a Super Bowl LI ring. He got it from a New England Patriots player. That unidentified player left the team. Spina sold the ring to a championship ring broker for $63,000.
Spina, with the ring, also received some information. He learned the former Patriots player could buy additional Super Bowl rings for family and friends. He then pretended to be the former player and ordered three rings with “Brady” engraved in them. Spina said they were gifts for Tom Brady’s baby.
Spina tried to sell the rings to a person in Orange County, saying that Tom Brady gave these Super Bowl rings to his nephews! That buyer didn’t believe that Brady had nephews and backed out. Spina eventually sold the rings to an auction house for $100,000. In February 2018, one of the rings sold for $337,219!
Spina is charged with mail fraud, wire fraud, and identity theft. He could face up to 92 years in federal prison for the fraudulent purchase of the Tom Brady Super Bowl rings. There is a plea deal on the table where Spina agrees to pay restitution to the Patriots player he bought the ring from in the first place. He is scheduled to appear in court on January 31st.
