Tampa Electric Changes Plan On 2022 Rates
Power companies are looking to charge more to meet rising costs. Some have already gotten state approval. TECO has chosen not to do so.
Tampa Electric Company presented their proposal to the Florida Public Service Commission in 2021. The plan was to raise rates in order to raise an additional $273 million. This would have been done through higher power costs to the consumer. TECO has now pulled back on this plan.
TECO did not give a reason for their decision. As prices of natural gas change, TECO may revise their request. The company may come up with new numbers and resubmit their request later in the month of January. We’ll keep an eye out for that.
The power company serves around 2,000 square miles of central Florida. This includes Hillsborough County and parts of Pasco, Polk and Pinellas Counties. Over 800,000 customers are served by TECO.
The rising cost of natural gas is a major reason for the rate hike plan. Florida Power and Light as well as Duke Energy each have plans to raise rates as well. The state has already approved FP&L’s proposal. They are currently considering Duke Energy’s proposal.
