Key West’s Southernmost Point Landmark Damaged by Fire

LANDMARK DESTROYED: Police in Florida’s Key West say two suspects caused “extensive damage” to the landmark Southernmost Point buoy when they set fire to a Christmas tree right next to it in the early hours of New Years Day. The fire was extinguished by Key West Fire Department, police said.

Police now say the suspects have been identified as 21-year-old David B. Perkins of Leesburg, and 21-year-old Skylar Rae Jacobson of Texas. Apparently, the suspects caused about $5,000 in damages.

Perkins has since turned himself in to the police, and is being charged with criminal mischief with damages over $1,000. Jacobson has made arrangements to turn himself into police.
