Business Takes Accountability for Roofing Nails Dumped on Busy St. Pete Road

NILES, IL. – JULY 29: A roofer works on a new home July 29, 2002 in Niles, Illinois. Sales of new homes in the United States hit a record in June, the government said, with the seasonally adjusted annual rate of purchases topping a million units for the first time as homebuyers took advantage of persistently low interest rates. MJ and the crew were talking about a story this morning about a truck that dumped hundreds of nails on Pasadena Road in St. Petersburg. What MJ didn't expect, was for the owner of the company to call into the show.

The original events of the story happened last Tuesday, just around 10 am in St. Pete. WFLA reported that hundreds of roofing nails were dumped onto the road. But not much more information could be found.

As MJ began talking about the story this morning, a listener by the name of John called into the show to clarify some information. John said he was the manager of ABC Supply Company, the company that owned the delivery vehicle that carried the nails.

Here's what happened this morning.

John told MJ and the crew that the driver left an unsecured box of nails in the back of the truck. He says the nails must have fallen as the driver turned a corner. But John says he already has replaced some tires of cars involved in the incident.

MJ spoke with WFLA's Chip Osowski about the call with John. You can read more about his interview with MJ here.

There’s good and bad in everything One thing we learned in this pandemic is that a lot of people would love to work from home.

Why fight this ever increasing Southwest Florida traffic to go work retail somewhere when you can make the same money at home. So, to help people find companies looking for remote workers in Florida and all over the US, FlexJobs has revealed its latest report of the top 100 companies hiring remote jobs in 2022.

As originally reported by Anne Erickson at WRIF, for the study they looked at 57,000 companies who work with FlexJobs' site. Each organization is looking to hire “hundreds, if not thousands, of remote jobs in a given year,” FlexJobs career services manager Brie Reynolds tells CNBC Make It.

The number 3 company on the list is Tampa-based SYKES. A quick look at the Sykes page shows 228 jobs available. Many of the jobs have been posted in the last week. They also show Support Agent jobs specializing in Finance, Health Care, or maybe you don’t have a specialty – that’s ok. There’s plenty of jobs for that too. Most only require a High School diploma.

Since the work is remote, there’s no reason why the company you work for needs to be located in Florida. But do be aware of the tax change. Florida does not charge a state income tax, but most states do. And some states will require you to pay state income tax whether or not you work in that state. It’s called the “source rule”. California is a state that does this. According to Manes Law: “California taxes all taxable income with a source in California regardless of the taxpayer’s residency.” So in this case you’ll need to pay the state of California their share even though you may live in Zephyrhills, Florida. If you have more than one job offer, this might be something to take into consideration.

Many of the companies looking to are major organizations with big names, so lots of familiarity here.
