Police: Ocala Man Offers to Fix Woman’s Car, Sells it to Scrap Yard
Police say an Ocala man was arrested after he offered to help fix a woman’s car, but then sold it to a scrap yard.
53-year-old Michael D. Pickering offered to locate a new motor and transmission for a woman’s 1995 Honda Civic, according to a report from Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The victim says she dropped her car off to Pickering in May of 2021, and was told that she didn’t have to pay for the services until after she got her vehicle back.
However, she says Pickering never gave it back.
The victim told police that she did receive updates on the status of her vehicle over time. The victim says she finally went to Pickering’s place on January 21 of this year. She says she found that her car was gone.
Apparently, Pickering had instructed another man at the property to take the car to a scrap yard. A police report says Pickering was supposed to make payments to the victim over time until she received $2500. However, she says she got no form of payment.
Eventually police found out that Pickering had sold the vehicle to Mark’s Auto & Truck. Reports say he told the business that he was the owner of the vehicle. Paperwork shows that the car was sold to the business on January 13 for $195.20.
Pickering admitted to hiring someone to sell the vehicle. However, Pickering told police that the victim was supposed to supply the parts and pick up the vehicle, but never did.
Pickering was arrested for grand theft of a motor vehicle and dealing stolen property, according to MCSO. He is being held on a $7,000 bond.
